Emeryk grew out of a Germanic name, the old Amalric that later German speech shaped into Emmerich. The two pieces still show. One is amal, work or labor, the ground of the Gothic royal house of the Amals. The other is ric, ruler. Put them together and you reach the plain sense the name still holds in Polish, władca domu, a ruler of the home and of work.
The name found a saint. Emeric of Hungary was the son of King Stephen, and he died young in 1031 after a hunting accident. Rome canonized him alongside his father, and his feast fixed a date. Polish calendars still mark Emeryk on 4 November.
So the name is rare, and it reads as old. A boy called Emeryk on a class register stands a little apart from the Kacpers and Szymons. What sits behind the spelling is that Germanic root: work joined to rule, the household ruler of władca domu.
