What Ekhard means

Where Ekhard comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Ekhard comes from two old Germanic words. The first, ecke, meant the edge of a blade. The second, hard, meant hardy or brave. Together they give the meaning set down in Polish as odważny mieczem, brave with the sword.

The name found a home in the German lands. Ekkehard of St. Gall, a monk who died in 973, wrote and copied manuscripts in his abbey. A later Ekkehard chronicled the same monastery. Neither man fought, yet each bore the blade in his name.

Then came Meister Eckhart, born around 1260, a preacher and theologian. He preached instead. He turned that martial edge toward the mind, and his sermons cut at comfortable ideas about God.

Ekhard has no diminutive and no feminine form. On a Polish class register it would stand out at once. The blade stays in the sound of it: ecke, the edge, and hard, the courage to hold it.
