Dobrogniewa

Dobrogniewa comes from the old Slavic habit of building a name from two words. Here they are dobro, good, and gniew, anger. The plain reading gives "good anger," in Polish dobry gniew, a pairing that sounds stranger now than it did to the people who first used it.

To early Slavic ears, gniew held less of the household quarrel and more of spirited force, the heat a person brings to a fight worth having. The same stem sits inside Zbigniew, an old name read as "to dispel anger." Dobrogniewa turns that heat toward the good. Both halves are plain Polish. The first, dobro, is the dobro you hear in dobry, dobranoc, and dobrze.

The name has a masculine twin, Dobrogniew, and both belong to a class of old Polish names that faded and now surface mostly in records and history books.

Call the register in a Polish classroom and you will not meet a Dobrogniewa. On an imieniny calendar it is rare. What survives is the meaning, good anger, dobry gniew.
