Damroka comes from Slavic roots, and its meaning points to the land: from the oak forest. The Polish gloss is „kobieta z dąbrowy", a woman of the dąbrowa, the oak wood. Historians reading medieval necrologies suspect Damroka is a worn-down form of Dąbrówka, which keeps the same root, dąb, the oak.
The name has a real bearer. Damroka Sobiesławicówna was a semi-legendary Pomeranian princess, daughter of Świętopełk II, recorded in monastery necrologies at Oliwa and Żuków, and remembered as the founder of the church at Chmielno. Her death was set down for the 25th of May. Kashubia kept the name after the chronicles thinned.
Aleksander Majkowski put a Damroka into his Kashubian novel about Remus, and that fixed the name in literature. It stayed rare. On a class register in Pomerania, a Damroka still stands out.
