Damien

The French spelling of a Greek name meaning "to tame," the healer sense added later through the physician saint Damian. In Poland the boy usually becomes Damian, so this form stays rare: most Poles have never met one.

What Damien means

Where Damien comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Damien comes from Greek, from the verb daman, to tame or subdue. The Polish short meaning keeps that old sense in the word pogromca, the one who masters what is wild. Beside it runs a second sense, uzdrowiciel, the healer, and that reading arrived later.

It came through two brothers named Kosma and Damian, physicians in the early church who treated the poor without payment, were martyred, and were later honored as patrons of doctors. So the tamer and the healer settled into the same name.

The spelling we know is French, taken into Latin as Damianus before that. English borrowed the French form and it spread after the 1970s. One documented bearer is Father Damien of Molokai, the Belgian priest who lived among people with leprosy in Hawaii and was canonized in 2009.

In a Polish class register the name reads plainly, its imieniny falling on 26 September. The Greek root still means to tame.
