What Bridget means

Where Bridget comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Bridget grew from Celtic roots, from the name of the goddess Brighid, which meant something close to "the exalted one." The old sense was height and rank. In Polish the meaning survives as dostojna, wysoka. Long before it belonged to any English speaker, it belonged to a figure the early Irish honoured, and the Christian saint Brigid of Kildare took the name into the church.

The English cared for it and made it their own. From the medieval English form come the everyday shapes, Bridie and Biddy among them, worn by ordinary women for centuries. The Polish register keeps the variant Brygida, closer to the Latin spelling.

One documented bearer stands out. Bridget of Sweden, the fourteenth-century mystic and founder of the Bridgettine order, carried the name across Europe and gave it a second life on the continent. A Polish child listed as Brygida on a class register inherits both lines, the Irish goddess and the Swedish saint. The meaning stays the same underneath the spellings: the exalted one, dostojna and wysoka.
