What Barnim means

Where Barnim comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Barnim grows from Slavic soil. It sits in a family of compound names, Barnimir and Barnisław among them, built on the element barni or broni, to protect. The short meaning recorded here, defender and protector, stays close to that root rather than arriving as a later gloss.

The name has a ducal past. Barnim I, called the Good, ruled Pomerania from 1220 until his death in 1278. Several dukes after him kept the name, down to Barnim VIII in the fifteenth century, all of the Griffin line.

In a Polish class register today a Barnim stands out, uncommon and plainly old. The Polish reading, broniący pokoju, one who defends peace, gives the plain sense of defender its aim.
