What Audrey means

Where Audrey comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Audrey comes from the Old English name Æthelthryth, formed from æthel, "noble," and þryð, "strength." Germanic roots. The two parts give the meaning it still holds in Polish, szlachetna siła.

The first well-known bearer was Saint Æthelthryth of Ely, a 7th-century abbess. English speakers wore the long name down, first to Etheldreda, then to Audrey. At the fairs held on her feast day, sellers hawked cheap lace as "St. Audrey's lace." That slurred phrase handed English a new word, "tawdry," for anything gaudy and low. A name meaning noble strength became the root of a word for junk.

Audrey stayed quiet and English for a long time. Audrey Hepburn pulled it onto screens worldwide in the 1950s. In Poland it lands as a borrowed name, rare on a class register, better known from film than from any local saint. Its sense held firm while its spelling wandered: noble strength, æthel and þryð.
