What Ari means

Where Ari comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Ari begins in Hebrew, where אֲרִי means lion. The word names the animal plainly, and it names strength by extension. Jewish tradition kept the lion close, binding it to the tribe of Judah, so the name carried that emblem for the boys who bore it. The Polish gloss holds the same sense: lew.

In the Scandinavian north the same three letters belonged to a separate name with its own history. Ari Þorgilsson, called the Wise, wrote the Íslendingabók in twelfth-century Iceland and recorded the early history of the settlement. His is among the oldest names preserved in Icelandic prose.

Ari sits on two shelves at once. On a Polish class register it reads as short and finished, with no diminutive to shrink it and no longer form standing behind it. One name, four letters. The meaning stays fixed: lew, the lion.
