Apollina

Apollina comes from Greek, and behind it stands Apollo, god of light, music, and healing. The name means belonging to Apollo. That divine root gives it a bright, formal weight, the sort attached to figures of the sun and of poetry.

In Poland the name usually appears as Apolonia, its everyday variant. From Apolonia comes the diminutive Pola, short enough for a school register and easy at home. Saint Apollonia, a martyr of third-century Alexandria, became the patron of dentists, and her feast falls on 9 February. A girl named in this line inherits a name-day with real standing in the Polish calendar.

Apollina keeps the fuller, more solemn spelling. It sounds older than Pola and grander than Apolonia. A child written down by it at the urząd enters a line that runs from a Greek god to a Christian saint. The meaning stays fixed: belonging to Apollo.
