What Apolinary means

Where Apolinary comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Apolinary comes from the Latin Apollinaris, "belonging to Apollo." The god gave the name its meaning in English, "of Apollo," the Roman deity of light, music and healing. A Roman who bore Apollinaris was marked as the god's own, and the Polish reading holds that sense plainly: należący do Apollina.

Then the name changed hands. Apollinaris of Ravenna, remembered as that city's first bishop, was a martyr of the early Christian centuries, and today he is counted a patron of artists. The pagan root stayed in the letters while the story attached to it turned Christian. That is the reason Apolinary appears in the Polish calendar of saints at all.

Polish keeps his feast. Imieniny fall on the 23rd of July, the day tied to Apollinaris of Ravenna, and again on the 5th of October.

The feminine variant is Apolinaria, the same Latin bone under a different ending. Read a class register and you will meet the short form Apol or Polek before the full name. What the name says has not moved since Rome: of Apollo.
