What Anzor means
Where Anzor comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Anzor is a man's name from the Caucasus. Circassians, Chechens, and Georgians have all carried it. One well-supported etymology traces it to the Georgian noble title aznauri, which reaches back to Middle Persian aznawar, meaning "noble." That is the source of its short meaning.
The name had real standing. In the 19th century a Kabardian noble house called the Anzor family held power in the northern Caucasus, and the name marked their rank rather than decorated it.
It crossed from title into everyday use, and it still sounds at home across the region. The Georgian choral musician Anzor Erkomaishvili, who spent his life recovering old polyphonic songs, is one documented bearer. On a Polish form at the urząd, Anzor reads as foreign, and a clerk would likely ask how to spell it. The line back to aznauri, "noble," stays legible.
