What Amon means

Where Amon comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Amon comes from Hebrew, and its oldest bearer sits in the Hebrew Bible. Amon was a king of Judah, son of Manasseh, whose reign the Second Book of Kings sets down in a few verses. He took the throne at twenty-two and held it for two years. His own courtiers killed him. The root is Hebrew.

The English gloss, "the hidden one," did not begin there. That sense belongs to the Egyptian god Amun, whose name was read as "the hidden." Over centuries the two names sat close enough for the meaning to drift toward the Hebrew Amon. The reading of "hidden" was fastened to the name later. It did not come from the first root.

In a Polish class register, Amon lands near the top, short and quick to call. It carries no fixed imieniny and no soft diminutive. What stays is the plain Hebrew form and its borrowed meaning: ukryty, the hidden one.
