What Akwila means

Where Akwila comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Akwila comes from the Latin word aquila, which means eagle. The origin is plain and old. Roman legions marched behind a silver eagle mounted on a pole, the standard also called the aquila, carried by a soldier who took his title from it.

The name reaches the New Testament through a real bearer. In Acts 18, Aquila is a Jewish tentmaker who leaves Rome for Corinth and works beside Paul. His wife Priscilla appears next to him in the text, and the pair are named together more than once. A second-century scholar, Aquila of Sinope, carried the same name and translated the Hebrew Bible into Greek.

In Polish the meaning lands on one word, orzeł, the same bird that sits on the national coat of arms. A child listed as Akwila on a school register holds a Roman soldier's word and a bird of prey at the same time. The eagle stood for height and sharp sight long before any crest. The root stays visible under it all: aquila, eagle, orzeł.
