What Aditya means
Where Aditya comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Aditya comes from Sanskrit, where the word means "belonging to Aditi." Aditi is a mother goddess of Hindu tradition, and her sons, the Adityas, are counted among the solar deities. The sun itself, Surya, carries Aditya as one of its names. So the plain gloss of the name is sun, and its longer reading is son of Aditi.
The Adityas appear in the Rigveda, one of the oldest surviving texts in any Indo-European language. Their number shifts between the early hymns and the later texts, growing to twelve, one for each month of the solar year.
In Poland the name is rare. A boy called Aditya on a Warsaw class register usually has a parent or grandparent from India. It has no Polish diminutive of its own and no name-day in the church calendar.
The word travels well because its root is old. Aditi splits into a-diti, meaning unbound or without limit. Her name and her son's belong to the same Sanskrit family, and the son's meaning stays fixed: sun.
