Achacjusz

Almost no one in Poland answers to it: the records hold just three living men, and no boy took it last year. From Greek, it pulls two ways at once: Akakios, "free from evil," and achates, the banded agate stone.

What Achacjusz means

Where Achacjusz comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Achacjusz comes from Greek. The root Akakios joins the prefix a-, meaning without, to kakos, meaning evil. The literal sense is free from evil, innocent, a person untouched by malice.

A second thread runs alongside. Greek achates names the agate stone, and Polish tradition links Achacjusz to that word, which is why the Polish gloss sets agat beside nieznający zła. The two readings sit in the name together, and neither has fully pushed out the other.

Saint Acacius carried the name into the Christian calendar. Latin turned Akakios into Achatius, and Polish reshaped that form into Achacjusz. It is rare now. You will meet it on an old parish register sooner than on a school class register.

Whoever answered to it answered to two senses at once, freedom from evil and the banded shine of an agate.
