What Abdon means

Where Abdon comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Abdon comes from Hebrew. The root is 'abad, meaning to serve, and the name reads plainly as servant. Polish holds the same idea in its word for the name's sense, sługa.

The Book of Judges hands the name to a ruler. Abdon son of Hillel, the Pirathonite, appears in chapter twelve as one of the judges of Israel, credited with forty sons, and buried in the hill country of Ephraim (Judges 12:13-15). Centuries later it belonged to a Persian nobleman, Saint Abdon, martyred with his companion Sennen under the emperor Decius. Polish calendars still fix his imieniny on 30 July.

On a school register the name is rare, and a teacher may pause before the first syllable. Few Polish boys carry it now. What holds steady is the meaning: servant, sługa.
